Surprise Saturday Morning: St. Paddy's Day 8k

by Lisa on March 14, 2010 · 30 comments

Good Sunday afternoon! I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend.

I know I did. Let’s see, let’s back it up a little.

Friday night, I pretty much laid on the couch and watched 17 Again.

Ya know, I’ve never found Zac Effron to be that attractive. I know he is good looking, but he is just too pretty for me. Too perfect. I like some flaws, and a bit more “manly” men. However, I found myself oddly attracted to him in this movie.

While I was watching the movie, I texted Kacy. Somehow in our texts back and forth, I decided to run the St. Paddy’s Day 8k in Oklahoma City.

I was really excited, but also really nervous. This was my first real race and I hadn’t really mentally been preparing for it at all! On top of that, I’ve run run 5 miles before. However, I thought it would be so much fun to run it with Kacy.

I woke up Saturday morning to look outside and realize it was dreary, cloudy, and so windy. Being the non-runner I am, I had no idea what to wear. I was texting Kacy basically saying “omg what do I wear?!”. I eventually picked her up at her apartment and we headed to the race together.

We got to the race early because I had to register, but it was fun getting there early. We walked around and warmed up, people watched at all the people dressed up as Leprachauns. Finally, the race started.

We agreed before that we weren’t concerned with time. We just wanted to finish and we really didn’t want to stop and walk. We wanted to run the whole thing! And really, we kicked butt. I remember thinking how nice it was to run with someone and have someone to talk to because it made the time go by so much faster. Plus, neither of us had watches on which helped us be completely unconcerned with time. It only became difficult the last mile because we were running against some narley wind. However, we did it! And we didn’t have to walk! We stopped once to get a quick drink of water and once to rearrange some clothing because it got hot! But that’s it. We didn’t finish in any great time, but that’s ok. We finished and had fun and that’s all we cared about.

After the race ended, we went to a Mama Roja to refuel after our race. I ordered the Chicken Tortilla Soup and 1 Chicken soft Taco. Both were very tasty.

Final Thoughts

I had a wonderful time at the race. I think I mainly enjoyed getting to spend time with a friend doing something active. However, I gotta be honest. I don’t think racing is something I want to pursue any farther than the 10k I’m doing in April. I had fun, but the thought of running that far again kind of makes me feel icky. I just don’t have a blast doing it. I enjoy lifting and sticking to HIIT interval training and short quick intense cardio workouts much more. That’s what life is about though right? Trying new things to see if you like them. I’m so happy I did the race and I’m so excited about the Redbud in April, but I’m even more excited that I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new.

Oh yeah, Zac Effron is hot. I am old enough to be his mother (practically), but I still think he’s a Hottie McHotterton.

Congrats on your race!! :D

Zac Efron is NOT too pretty :-) haha.

Also, it is all about having fun! Too many bloggers put too much pressure on themselves in these races! And your recovery meal looks FAB!

I am proud of you for trying the endurance thing. You can do anything you set you mind to and that is one thing I admire. I am also glad you did it with a friend. I would love to meet her someday.

Hey we went to Mamma Roja’s yesterday for lunch and I got the exact same thing. It was good but I ate too many chips. Can’t wait to see more pics of the race.

That’s awesome that you got to spend some quality time with your friend! And good for you for knowing what you do and don’t like! I sometimes think people run and do races because they feel like they “should” and I am always telling people that running and racing is not for everyone and really unless you love it…why do it? :)

Completely agree! I’ve always wondered if it was for me and I’ve heard so many people say so many good things about races—about getting that “high” and feeling so motivated etc etc…I never felt that way. I just felt happy to be spending time with a friend! So, I plan on rocking my 10k bc I set out too and I wanna have fun with Kacy again, but after that, I think my racing days are done :) .

I love that you are honest about running not being your thing. It’s not mine either and sometimes with soooo many runners in the “blog world” it feels like it should be my thing. No point in doing workouts that don’t suit our interests. But you tried it and had fun with a friend so that definitely counts for something.

And I agree – Zac Effron = too pretty boy!

Congrats on the race! I totally respect you for recognizing that running isn’t something you really enjoy. Different people like different things :)

Zac Effron IS a little too perfect…I think it’s the hair

I couldn’t agree more about Zac Effron. He’s just so pretty. Sort of like Jude Law.

I also feel the same way about running. While the farthest race I ran was a 5k I’m pretty sure it’s not my thing either. Unless there is mud involved. I’m just dying to try a Muddy Buddy! :-) I too love lifting and interval training.

I’m pretty agreeable today. ;-)

I think checking in to make sure you’re still enjoying exercising is so important! Good for you for being honest with yourself and congrats on the race :)

Congrats to completing your first race! I like the atmosphere you get during those races, it usually motivates me and I have fun at the same time. I’m all about strength rather than endurance so long distance running is just not for me either (I tend to suffer if I run more than 10k). :-)
I’m still catching up on blogs and just finished reading your last 4 posts. Negative self talk is so easy to do. I think being an athlete (you – gymnast, me – sprinter) makes you/me very disciplined, which makes us be hard on ourselves. I do expect 110% out of myself every single time I exercise. It gets easier with time. You are doing great – noticing when you are having a ‘fat talk’ and deciding to do something about it is something you should be very proud of. Well done!

That’s so awesome! I want to maybe run in a race this year, as I’ve never been in one. It must give you a huge sense of accomplishment to finish!

Way to go! I like racing because it makes me push myself and gives me a benchmark in my training…and I like the t-shirts! :)

Congrats on your race! I agree with you, Zac Efron just isn’t manly enough for me. I don’t want to come close to weighing more than a boy i’m dating.

Congrats on your race! That wind around Lake Hefner is always brutal! But it’s a beautiful trail. The Mexian joint I went to is Casa Pericos on NW 63rd & Merdian. It’s my absolute fave. Give it a whirl!

I’ve never found Zac attractive either. His hair looks like it would take longer to straighten than mine!
