The Little Things

When me and Sean moved in together, we decided to not get cable. The biggest reason for this was to save money. He paints and plays video games at night and I will be studying at night so we saw no need. I figured I’d also be more productive and that is priceless.

Well, I miss TV. A lot. Sure, I’ve been watching my Netflix on my computer but it’s not the same. I miss having the news on in the background. I miss getting ready in the morning with Good Morning America.

So, we finally plugged in my TV and I have basic cable! I won’t lie, after my walk with Sean and my pups, I enjoyed a night with Modern Family. And I will welcome Robin, George, and Sam back into my life tomorrow morning. I am very excited. It’s the little things.

Other than that, tonight has been pretty basic. Immediately after work, I hit up the gym for an upper body workout. I haven’t lifted in over a week because of my strange chest pain, but, it hasn’t hurt as bad lately so I thought I’d give it a go. I avoided direct chest work just to be safe.

I also went old school on myself and lifted Body for Life style.

It was a great and fun workout. I was tempted to hop up on the treadmill after I was done and do some cardio, but I am really trying to cut back because I know it’s not needed. I would not consider myself a cardio addict at all though…in fact…I like lifting MUCH better than cardio and there are many days I don’t like it at all. Cardio has always been a safe thing for me though. I feel “safer” if I do it..with my weight etc. So, I want to prove to myself that if I only do cardio 3 times a week (plus lots of walking with the pups) that I won’t balloon up.

I also got a lot of great comments from you all regarding cardio and your opinions on it…

  • Dotsie said: Even when I was lifting heavy and wanted those muscle gains I still did cardio..in my real world, it was great to be able to squat way over my body weight, but in reality, so is being able to walk up and down several flights of stairs, or these days, run behind small kids. It’s fun to watch the meat heads (male) suffer in a spin class though :)
  • Gracie said: Confession: I literally do not even remember the last time I did cardio. And you want to know something? I think I’ve actually *lost* some weight since I gave up my normal cardio routine. With that aside, though, I’m not a huge fan or believer in doing hours upon hours of cardio (unless it’s something you love and/or are training for!)
  • Jen said: I wanted to mention that last year I changed my workout regime to 2 days of lifting and 3 days of cardio (rather than 5 days) and have seen results like NEVER before with this regime! I lift heavy and hard and diet to lose the weight rather than kill myself with the cardio and have had great results! I think you will find you enjoy 3 more than 5 sessions b/c you can really make those 3 count!
  • Nichole said: If you do a few sessions of strength training here and there, you don’t have to worry about cardio as much at all. We are so use to seeing that pretty number of hours/calories on a elliptical and treadmills, that we don’t realize all the hard work our body is doing during and after a good strength training session.
  • Melissa said: I believe bodies are made in the kitchen and fine tuned in the gym. You’ll be fine cutting back on cardio. Even just taking a walk every now and then when you have time is enough to maintain. (and then she said that comment made her sound like a douche…haha…love her)
  • Katie said: I used to be a cardio junky, but after cutting back I’ve discovered that I never needed that much in the first place – my body definitely reacted positively to a little less!
  • Katie @ Faith, Food, and Fitness: girl cutting back cardio was seriously the BEST thing i did for myself. I only do it 2-3 days a week now and ive never felt better. It made NO difference in how I looked either!! I just had more energy and less stress!
  • Mary said: Cardio’s way less important for weight management/being trim as weight training is. I used to be a slave to cardio and never had the body I wanted. Now (when I can get to the gym), I’m there 5 days a week doing 1 hour weights with 15 minutes low intensity “cardio”- like walking..5 minute warm up and 10 minute cool down. I actually end up burning *more* calories weight training than I evr did in the same amount of time as cardio- it really gets the heart rate up if you lift heavy!

I had so many more amazing comments, but these were just a few I thought I’d highlight. I’d definitely go back and read through them if you are a slave to the cardio machines.

Dinner

It was mainly a leftover night for me and Sean, but I did cook my veggies a new way.

I saw this recipe on Courtney @ Ice Cream and Wine’s blog and I knew I had to make it. I am a new lover of veggies, so learning new ways to cook them and make them taste good is a big thing for me.

Yellow Squash & Tomatoes

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 small yellow squash, 1/4-inch sliced
1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes, halved
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
salt & pepper to taste

Directions:
Heat olive oil in a medium-sized skillet over medium heat. When heated, add yellow squash and cook for 8 minutes.

Add in tomatoes, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Cook for additional 4 minutes until all vegetables are heated through.

Yield: 4 servings

It was tasty! I loved the Red Pepper Flakes–really kicked it up a notch! Although, I think her picture is much prettier.

I paired it with leftover Pineapple Meatloaf and had a fantastic dinner.

Eddie agrees that it was fantastic. I think he wanted some.

I know I said that I was going to do some 30 Days of Insight tonight, but this post is already long enough. Another day :) .

Ok, I need help with veggies. I want to get more creative…open myself up to new veggies and new ways to eat them.

What’s your favorite veggie to cook with? Do you have a favorite recipe?

I like that workout! :)
I have an upper body workout on Friday and I am actually excited! I think I need to go up in weight in some of my moves though because I am not feeling the DOMS anymore. :(

Hey Katie! Thanks, glad you like it!

And dont worry about getting DOMS everytime and being sore isnt always a good indicator of a good workout. But, do go up in weights if you feel like you can and it’s not as challenging as it was.

I literally like most all veggies, but spinach is probably my favorite–with lemon, olive oil, sald/pepper–perfection! As far as the cardio goes–I think I’ve cut back to the point where it’s non-existant, ooopps!

It definitely is the little things…I love Good Morning America although I was sad when Diane left. She is my hero. I want to be her!

I love almost all veggies…not lima beans though. And okra isn’t a favorite either. I love veggies Indian style…so delicious!

I definitely need to come back and read the comments on the veggies…I need help with them, too!!

You did get some great comments! I definitely agree with them, especially the one that said if you have the few days of strength, you don’t need as much cardio. That’s what I was doing when I dropped my weight…that was awesome! Love lifting-love the results. Love the cardio, but not a slave to it. Man…I wanna lift RIGHT NOW! Haha :-D

Again, I wanna hug Eddie through my screen!!

That is my favorite combo right there: yellow squash, tomatoes, and red pepper flakes! I also really like to stir fry frozen carrots, broccoli, and green beans (or snow peas) in a little olive oil with either soy sauce or peanut sauce on top. Another good one is to grill big slices of yellow squash, zucchini, or eggplant and serve it as a sandwich with some grilled asparagus and marinara sauce.

I would have to say that fresh green beans are my favorite but I do love cauliflower. Need to be careful some veggies can give you gas!!!

BASIC CABLE :)

I knew you would miss TV.

Awe Eddie :)

I have been on a collard greens and mustard greens kick lately. I just “fry” them in coconut oil until they are crispy like chips. I put some asparagus in there to at the end of cooking YUM!

Also roasted radishes are like potatoes!

You definitely do not need cable. You can watch almost every show online or just netflix it. Cable is a waste of money at this point :)

Glad you enjoyed a little TV. I think basic cable is all that’s necessary. I barely watch anything on TV anymore.

The comments on cardio are really interesting. I want to add that I am training for a marathon and running tons. I had lost my focus with strength training for a bit, but recently added it back into my routine. I’ve already seen more results from weights than I get from running miles and miles. You don’t have to worry about a thing! I wish I embraced strength training more.

Hmmm, those veggies look amazing!! I love cooking with zucchini, especially when it’s in season! I make it lots and lots in the summer. (And I’d miss tv too!) :)

Yea, I love having TV as well. I don’t watch much (just my fews shows I enjoy during the week), but it is nice to just relax to. Half the time it is background noise anyway to Peter & I talking or me doing stuff on the computer if I’m on at night.

Shroomies are my fave veggie to cook with.

There is nothing like waking up to some Chris Cuomo or David Muir…..I love GMA!

My fav veggie to use is mushrooms (I think it’s actually classified as fungi, but whatev- I’m calling it a veggie for now). I throw them in almost anything to make it that much better!

And I’ve considered suspending cable over the summer for several years now just because I’m usually pretty busy and it’s not like there are a whole lot of shows I watch that start over the summer. But you’re right- the morning news in the background is key and I think I would miss it most!

Glad you had a great workout. Love that and am with you on the little things. Sometimes that’s all it takes, something seemingly minor to make you a happy camper. I saw that recipe the other day as well. How could it possibly be bad??!! I love just about any veggie.

That picture of Eddie eying your plate is so cute! HA!

One of my favorite veggies EVER is spaghetti squash! Oh my gosh, I love it so much I can eat half the dang thing in one sitting! Great alternative to pasta when watching carbs and so colorful!

lately, i’m a huge fan of zucchini and squash. i probably eat 3-4 of each a week. they’re so cheap right now too. all i do is cook them in balsamic with some seasoning…or even italian dressing. yum! so simple and good.

i have to say I enjoy TV as well. Twice a week I start work at 11:30 am, so I enjoy watching some talk shows, news in the AM and same at night as well! Im glad you got some back in your life! I just have basic too! and it works for me! :)

that workout looks awesome, 20 on biceps?!?! i HATE working biceps and I can tell because 12 lbs of 10 reps works me hard! i need to build up on those and focus a bit more on compound moves to increase some strength!

I love that picture of your dog! So cute!
I almost always cook with celery. I don’t know why, but its my favorite vegetable. My mom makes a celery casserole (it started as a joke) and its one of the best things I’ve ever tasted!

Interesting cardio comments… hmm..

I didn’t have cable for a while (1 year roughly) and I eventually missed it too. It’s sad, but I felt disconnected and out of the loop! And I love (LOVE) modern family and glee, and don’t know how I could get along without it now (sad, I know :) )

That’s exciting that you have basic cable! You’ll definitely get most of the football games if you have ABC.

I dont really do cardio much anymore either.. In crossfit your heart rate is up crazy amounts anyways.. and for example our workout yesterday included about a mile of running within the workout.. so i just dont do standard cardio sessions anymore.. Im leaner and meanier than ive ever been too! Those veggies look delish!

Reply

april August 12, 2010 at 10:54 am

I used to be the same way about thinking cardio is what would keep me lean but now I haven’t done a session in probably over 3 months.. and I think I look better without it! Plus I’m not so drained!

Eddie is so cute! :)

I love all of this strength training talk — I know I do too much cardio, but I honestly really enjoy it. I do want to get stronger though. I think after my 10 mile race in Oct I will focus on strength training more.

I love my tv. I couldn’t live without it!

I love me some spaghetti squash..serve chilled or warm with marinara..delish!

Cooking with quinoa is also a lot of fun because you can just throw in a hodgepodge of veggies to make a complete filling dish!

Your veggies look delish! But I have no new ideas for you…I tend to saute, roast or throw mine in with some eggs most of the time.
