Guys, I’m tired. I have been sick and I studied all weekend and now I just want to zone out. So, I have a lovely guest person from someone who has way more energy than me….Tina @ Faith Fitness & Fun. She has written a lovely and fun guest post on how to make your blog more appealing.
I’m sure you all know Tina, but if you don’t, then you need to get to know her. She has been INSTRUMENTAL in my journey towards become more balanced with food and exercise. She has been a friend, a confidant, and someone I can always turn to and I love her with all my heart. Plus, it’s comforting to know that she’s always praying for me.
I give the floor to Tina!
I love blogging. Over the past 8 months, it has become an integral part of my life. In a way, my blog Faith Fitness Fun has become a sort of love child. It was conceived by the joining of my passions. Now,I do my best to build it up through that love. I’m still learning and growing, but one thing I have learned is the best way to care for a blog is to make it more appealing to read. How to do that? Well the following 10 things (in no particular order) are a good start!
1. Include pictures. You don’t need to own a dSLR camera or have an overwhelming knowledge of photography. Pictures, no matter what their quality, make a blog more appealing to the eye. Just because they don’t look like Angela’s, doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy of posting.
2. Keep things brief and easy to read. Long-winded posts do not hold a reader’s attention very well. Proof read your posts to see if there are any areas you can shorten. You don’t have to cut yourself off from sharing all you intended, but be mindful of readers. You can also chop up longer posts by adding in pictures, bullet points and lists, bolded sections, etc where applicable. Always ask yourself if you would read that post if you found it in your reader.
3. Be open with topics. Blogging as a healthy living or food blogger does not limit what you can share to your workouts and meals for the day. If you want to talk about sex, like Lisa did, do it! If you want to share something about your dog/favorite book/a controversial issue, go for it! It’s your blog and you should never feel like you can’t share something valuable to you. I know I share on occasion about this little chick and her love of green monsters…
4. Have fun! Every post does not have to carry a serious or inspiring message. People enjoy the light-hearted posts just as much. Don’t pressure yourself to write something you don’t enjoy writing. It will show in your post.
5. Let people know a bit about you. We all feel comfortable sharing different levels of personal information. It might be opening up some vulnerable spots of your heart – whether in your past or present. It might be openly sharing pictures with you in them. It might be posting dirty little secrets that display the real you. It may be all of the above (raises hand in admission to being one huge open book). No matter what your privacy threshold, find some way to make your blog personal.
6. Write what you know. If you can divulge an encyclopedia of fitness information then share with your readers. If exercise tips are not your forte, but cooking is then dish out the recipes. If you have a way to put together inspiring posts, then let that be evident in your blog. Don’t follow trends or what others post. Write what you know.
7. Ignore stats. Those pesky numbers can affect your blogging negatively. When you get caught up in the numbers, you may post simply for the sake of posting. All that will do is stress you out and make blogging less fun.
8. Participate. Comment on other blogs to show you care about them as well. Reply to comments on your site so they get a sense of discourse and relationship from your blog. Showing that you are a genuine person makes you and your blog more appealing.
9. Have a message. People should be able to easily see what you hope to share through your blog. Whether it comes in a tag line, in your about page, a blog description page, or a regular theme among your posts you need something to distinguish you. Something that shows who you are and what you’re about. For example, I shared the 30 Days of Self Loveon my blog because its largely what my blog represents. And I hope to continue to reach as many as possible with my message – “True health is so much more than workouts and diets”.
10. Make it appealing to you! Post in whatever manner works for you. Write in a way that feels true to yourself and “find your blogging voice”. Enjoy what you write. Blogging for many of us is a hobby. Don’t make it work. Don’t make it a pain when it doesn’t have to be. It can be whatever you make it!
Thank you Tina! I’m ALWAYS in the need for guest posts since I am a pretty busy gal. If you would like to write one and be featured on my blog, please email me at LisaOkie@gmail.com.

Show your face – If I can’t put a face with a blog, I usually don’t stick around very long.
Great guest post Tina! I love the tips.
Great tips! Brief and easy to read is a good tip. A lot of blogs I’ve stumbled across had too many blocked paragraphs, very little pictures and clearly no editing. It makes it difficult to read. Especially when most people’s attention spans are short (mine included). And go easy on the smiley faces!
Only a few per post!
Definitely keeping posts to the point and not using a ton of text. The blogs I like to read the most use text + pictures — it is just easier on the eyes!
I also like blogs for who the blogger is — I like getting to know them. Seeing the same food every day isn’t super exciting — I’d rather hear about what is going on with them — workouts, books they are reading, places they travel to, their dreams, their ideas, opinions, etc.
I love this post!!
I love Tina (and her Dirty Little Secrets!)
and she has some great tips here!!
Lisa, feel better SOON ! XXO
Great guest post. I like blogs that are personal – like following someones life. We all have an opinion of what we thought life would be and it usually never is what we thought. It is always comforting to know that there are people out there going through exactly what you are going through. It sure can serve as a great benefit to all.
Great tips. I agree with all of them.
i agree with clarice, it’s nice to know a name and a face with a blog!
I really like this post! I’m a pretty new blogger and sometimes I find it hard to figure out what I want to write about. These are great tips!
I just wanted to say I hope you feel better Lisa!!! Physically and mentally as well. Love you, girl!
Lisa, feel better soon! Rest up and take care!!
Tina, great tips for spicing up a blog!! My biggest blogging tip is to just be yourself with no apologies.
Good post tina!
I think my tip would be to not try so hard to make your blog appealing. Its kind of like dating, make an effort, but dont be too desperate.
And i think its always fun to recruit a guest or two. Or do interviews with cool people in your life that dont have blogs.
I agree, I get so bothered when I read that people do things just to get more readers, or that they are stressed about not having enough. That just screams ME ME ME and feels so fake.
These are all lovely blogging tips! And don’t we all wish our photos could look like Ang’s.. oh man.
Love you both!
Great tips Tina! I totally agree on the one about ignoring the numbers. I often ignore them because I find that they put unnecessary pressure on me to attract more traffic. When I post without even thinking about the stats, I’m a lot happier with the outcome.
Hi Lisa! Hi Tina!
Lisa I hope you feel better- I’m proud of you for studying all weekend even though you didn’t feel good! That’s not easy! I drank a lot this weekend instead of studying, that was a GREAT idea.
Tina- great guest post as always
My favorite blog tips are, lots o’ pictures and just being myself. Once I found my blog voice, the blogging experience is a bazillion times more fun. The first time I blogged, I felt like I needed to do what everyone else was doing. Now I just do what I want to do!
Love this post and I Love Tina too. My blog is a good 3 weeks old and I fear that I won’t know what to talk about. Very helpful hints for this newbie! Thank you for doing that Lisa and Tina!
Great post.
I dislike blogs with ‘googled’ pictures.
I like to see the pictures of the actual blogger like Peanut Butter Fingers blog.
That is one of the BEST!!!
yes, no long paragraphs please without spacing.
Some now have youtube updates which are brilliant.
With so many blogs completely the same, everyone has to raise the bar!
The key to blogging is to blog like no one reads it. Hence candour and more honesty.
Great tips! I love the photos, bullet-type/recap posts and sharing fun facts or interesting things that interest the person – fun to learn about health/fitness/food – but also the person!
great post Tina! You are SOOOOO cute with your belly! I love it!
And I totally agree about the long post thing – I’m much more likely to read a short, bulleted post. I need to take that advice more often!
i love this post because I get in SUCH blogging ruts!! i feel that no one will care to read my posts anymore but ya know what, I blog because I lov eit and i blog what feels right to me at the time!! I love the advice blog about what interests you!
Love the blog tips! Very helpful to a new blogger like myself!
Wow-this was exactly the type of hints and blog ideas I needed. My posts are so long and boring sometimes-thank-you!
First thing’s first, I want to SEE YOU! I don’t put you in my Reader to look at pics of breakfast, lunch and dinner. I put you in to see you smiling, being goofy and living LIFE! I like a blog when I can hear its writer’s VOICE. I like variety and honesty and opinions.
I also like, no love, Tina. Thanks for sharing!
Preach Lisa!!!!!! You are AWESOME!!
i think all of us are seeing the stats drop dramatically lately. and i agree, it totally puts a damper on us not just because its less people coming to our blog, it feels like its because we’re not doing enough to keep people interested. but its definitely just the business and the whole routine and grind of being back to work or school or whatever. the best blogs that keep me reading are ones that have personality behind the pictures, and people who live their lives to the best of their being- embracing all the good and bad, and staying true to the joys of it all. that why i love seeing your updates, its just to see you and to hear about how your life is going- kind of like sharing a piece of the Lisa “Pie-of-life” haha if that makes sense <3 <3
Great post, love the tips!
I hope you feel better soon Lisa!
I think this is a really great post! I’ve been feeling a little lost with my blog lately but after reading this post I feel a little refreshed. Its so important to remember why you started the blog in the first place and make the posts you want to make
I agree, I also love seeing the bloggers face every once in awhile in their posts. I think it really helps make that connection between just reading words and actually feeling like you’re getting to know that person a little better.
Get well soon, Lisa! I’m sending you a bowl of virtual chicken noodle soup *use your imagination!
Great guest post, Tina! Love the tips
And Lisa, feel better! I’m fighting off quite the sinus infection right now, so I feel ya!
Those were super great tips!
Great tips Tina! Feel better Lisa!
I think numbers 2 and 7 are the big ones for me.
If I see a blog that looks interesting, but the posts are really long and have huge paragraphs, I’m not interested. It’s better to stick to really basic concepts than to cover everything in one post.
I also think it’s silly for bloggers to get caught up with blog stats and comment numbers. I know of one big blogger who only checks stats the first of each month, because otherwise it can really affect your self-esteem.
Great tips Tina! It’s always nice to have a face to put with a blog.
