I’m feeling a little better today.
With the stress of finals and having questions regarding some personal relationships, I’ve been a wreck at times.
There’s no sugar coating that.
I try to remind myself that everything will be ok…no matter what happens. Life will go on and I will be a happy person. I deserve to have all that I want in life.
Enough of that. I had delicious salad #7 of the 20 Salads in December Challenge.
Here’s the ingredients: asian ginger vinaigrette dressing, bean sprouts, carrots, Chinese noodles, grilled chicken, mandarin oranges mixed greens, snap peas, toasted almonds, toasted sesame seeds
Yes, it was as good as it sounds.
There’s one thing in my life that ALWAYS manages to put a smile on my face.
It’s Eddie.
Enter Flashback Friday.
I adopted Eddie 4 years ago. He was the best decision I’ve ever made.
I routinely volunteered at animal shelters in college. I loved going about 3 times a week. Whether it was simply walking and playing with the dogs or cats or cleaning their cages or giving them baths. I loved every minute of it.
I was always on the lookout for my perfect pet. I knew that I wanted to adopt, but I was just waiting for the right dog to come along.
I thought I had found her when I adopted Shelby, a Sheltie mix. Shelby was beautiful and a great dog. Except, I took her home and she constantly chased my two cats. She just wasn’t going to work. I had to take her back.
About a month later, I saw Eddie (or as they called him, Harry).
He wasn’t like the other dogs in the shelter. Most dogs are insane in shelters. They bark and jump when you walk past. When you take them out of their cage, you can hardly contain them on a leash. I understand why they are this way. They’ve been in a cage for days. I’d probably be that way too.
Not Eddie. He sat there perfectly calm. He didn’t jump or bark. He just looked up at me with extremely sad eyes. I looked at his card on his cage. He had been there for two weeks. Dogs usually only last 3 weeks at this shelter before they euthanize them.
I took him out, put him on a leash, and enjoyed a wonderful walk. He was a little timid, but not once did he pull me or act like a crazy person. He was still a big puppy at this point–only a year old. I always thought he was wise beyond his years.
I sat down on a bench and he put his face up on my leg and just looked up at me and gave me one big lick.
This was the exact same face he gave me that day at the shelter.
The shelter was about to close and I wasn’t ready to pull the gun yet. I told myself that I would come back tomorrow and if he was still there, he’d be mine.
Well, of course, I got there right as it opened and what do ya know…Eddie was there. I quickly adopted him and was thrilled with my decision.
This was adoption day. My stepsister came with me to get Eddie. She agreed that he was the perfect dog.
I won’t lie. The first week with Eddie was not all roses and sunshines. He pooped all over the floor, he wouldn’t get a crate, nor would he jump in a car. It was hard. I questioned my decision.
I took him to my vet to get him checked out and to make sure he was a healthy dog. He wasn’t. Turns out he had heartworms.
I was furious. Shelters are SUPPOSED to check for heart worms. I thought I had bought a $60 dollar dog–turns out I spent over $500 on him the first week I had him. Heart worm treatment is not cheap nor is it pleasant for the dog. I felt horrible for him–and for myself. That kind of money was hard to swing on a college budget.
This was Eddie right before I took him in for Heart worm treatment. He was not feeling well at all. Please excuse the messy disgusting college room.
He got treated and I was happy I was there to help him.
One weekend was a turning point in our relationship. I had to go home for the weekend and my mom wouldn’t let me bring him to her house. So, I had to board him for two days.
I think that was a wake-up call for Eddie being back in a cage. When I came back to pick him up, he sprang into my car and never pooped or peed on the floor again. He happily walked into the crate and loved every minute of it.
Eddie is 5 years old now. He is the wisest, calmest, most gentle dog I’ve ever known. I love him dearly.
We’ve spent time hiking, swimming, going to the lake, and just cuddling in bed. He makes me happy, he calms me when I’m sad and he is always there for me.
Adoption is such a wonderful thing. I truly believe that Eddie knows that I saved him and is grateful and repays me everyday for it.
Have you adopted? If so, tell me your story.

My dog was a rescue too. I think you can find some of the most amazing animals that way.
Eddie is adorable, Im so glad he has you!
That salad looks delicious. Your pup is adorable and you look beauuuuuuuutiful in yellow!
Eddie is adorable!!
I love the pic of eddy on jamba! lol
I think you know my adoption story! It will be 5 years in january that I’ve had fritz. I went one day not realizing all shelters didnt have a 24 hour waiting period. I wasnt ready so I went home and got everything ready and went back the next day… someone was JUST dropping off the fritz and his older brother. He was so tiny and perfect, grabbed his card and adopted him on the spot. The little bugger didnt spend more than an hour in his cage before he was chipped and on the metro home with me. He seriously is my baby!
What a cute story, I really enjoyed reading it. And you’re right – you will be happy and you do deserve it:)
I adopted my Charlie 5 months ago, and I love him to pieces. Truthfully, our adoption stories are very similar. Glad we were able to rescue our boys and give them good homes!
So precious, Lisa! You are awesome for adopting him! I would be open to adopting, but I truly have my heart set on only ONE breed of dog and that takes convincing my Hubby to get me one. I know they have Jack Russell Terrier adoption farms, but I don’t think any near our home:(
It’s amazing how pets, especially dogs, add so much joy and comfort to our lives! I can’t wait to go home to Texas for 10 days over Christmas and spend time with my family’s 3 JRTs. I miss them so so so much! And, I’m glad you have Eddie and I hope that things look up for you, because, YES, you DO deserve to be as happy as can be! Good luck with finals- it’s almost over, hon! HUGS!!!!
I LOVE this… Eddie is so sweet.
we adopted Basil from Oregon Dachshund Rescue… he was with a foster family because the humane society shelter freaked him out so much… and when we met him the first time, his foster “mom” brought him to us – meeting at the humane society. Before she left she fostered another dachshund. <3
Lately we have been thinking of getting a sister for Basil, and we would absolutely rescue again.
<3
This post made my day. Dogs are absolutely amazing. I swear they do more for us than we do for them. Loved al the pictures!
Aw what a cute story! I adopted my cat about 5 years ago, and she is the best thing ever! I love the picture of Eddie laying on top of Jamba, haha too funny.
I love adopted dogs! They are truly the best and I do feel like they appreciate having been taken in. We adopted a perfectly lovely 2 year old golden retriever from a rescue shelter. She is the sweetest dog and so well behaved even without training. She walked into our lives so seamlessly…like she had always been with us. My 14 yr old grumpy poodle even loves her…Her name is Scout Potato…don’t ask! Eddie is so freaking adorable too
Aw! Eddie is so adorable! I just love dogs. They make everything better. One look at their face and you melt. I want to adopt a dog so badly but I have to wait until my finances are in order.
Eddie seems like such a sweetheart! I wish so badly that I could adopt a dog or cat…but my nephew is incredibly allergic (even to “hypoallergenic” dogs – he broke out in hives when one licked him).
But I do completely agree that pets provide a companionship like no person can….there really is something about their unconditional love!
What a touching story! I adopted a kitten this summer, and I actually had to take her to the vet today because she hasn’t been feeling well. Everything is okay, but it makes me appreciate how much I love her!
Glad you’re feeling a bit better. This post made a bit teary eyed. That must be the exam stress leaking out.
I’m currently owned by three cats who happen to be ‘foster failures’. I call them my furkids and am so lucky to have them. I understand how frustrating it can be to discover unexpected health issues after adoption. Shortly after Katie decided to stay, it was discovered that she had a heart condition. I spent over $1000 in the first month or so that I owned her. It’s been an expensive trip. But she’s worth every penny.
Do you still have your cats? I don’t think I’ve ever read about them on your blog.
One of them was given to me by an ex, and when we broke up, he wanted to keep him so I let him. Little Jamba (in that picture, got out and I never saw him again).
I love cats and I can’t wait till I can get one.
sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling all that great. stress really can make you crazy sometimes! you’re lucky to have eddie to make you smile. my cat does exactly the same thing. i love how animals know just when to come up and cuddle whenever you arent feeling 100%!
I adopted Frankie. He had been living on the streets before his adoption, but he appeared to have been owned by people before. I wonder if they just let him out and didn’t look for him – that happens way too much with cats.
Ryan adopted Trixie from a family who had rescued her from an abusive situation. When I first went to pet her, she flinched. Now, she is the most confident dog ever and wags her tail and jumps on everyone who comes into our house. Training re: not jumping … now that’s a totally separate issue
Eddie is so cute!! He looks so cute curled up in that little bed.
We adopted a cat from a rescue shelter about 7 years ago. Sometimes he’s a pain in the butt but I love him anyway!
My dog was adopted 10 years ago. I got her when I was in college. I never thought about adopting a dog until my sister (who was in school to be a vet) had just spade a dog from the humane society for her final exam. She said that her roommate (who also just spade a dog)had the cutest dog that needed a home. Said she looked like a little fluffy teddy bear. I saw some pictures and told her that I wanted her! She has been with me the last 10 years and has gone through so much with me –through all the happy and sad times in my lifee… now that I have two kids of my own, I feel bad that I don’t give her the attention and love that I used to. But she never forgets. She follows me where ever I go…
I’m glad to hear your feeling a little better, I wish some of that would rub off on me.
Eddie so incredibly blessed to have been adopted by you. This post made me miss my old dog, milli. She was a German Shepherd and died about two and a half years ago. I’ll do a flashback friday if her someday. Anyhow, I’m dying to meet eddie after all the wonderful things I’ve read about him. Problem is, I’ll probably want to take him with me when I leave.
Eddie is so adorable!! He has such a loving expression!
I adopted Ophelia from a shelter called Cat Welfare. It’s a no-kill shelter. I was actually going to take home another cat, but he had a permanent snot problem and my roommates said no. So they led me to this cat who was in a cage all by herself in another room. They said that she was sweet, but didn’t care for other cats and that they thought she would be a great pet.
16 years later, we’re still together. I love that cat. She is my baby.
Oh Eddie! I can’t wait to adopt my puppy. I’m glad you found your little guy
he is so cute!!! i love the picture of him in his bed!! hang in there…contrary to how we all act, no one has it all together. you aren’t alone in feeling weird/stressed/sad/confused/however you feel!!! being human is hard.
I want a dog sooo bad! Eddie is a great dog and it’s so great that you were able to save him.
Btw, I’m always here to talk if you ever need to!
Love this story. Thanks for sharing. Both of my pups were adopted from breed specific rescue organizations (so was one other before the 2 crazies I have now). I am a HUGE supporter of rescue orgs and adopting pets from them. We actually drove all the way to Dallas to get Maddie then to the AR/OK state line to get Heath. I would drive that and farther any time.
I LOVE your Eddie, what a beautiful dog. I love his story
I also got my dog Boo when he was at the shelter for about 2 weeks. He didn’t go crazy when I walked by his cage (much like Eddie). I knew instantly he was mine! Although he was quiet at the shelter, Boo is quite the active and crazy dog…but I love him anyways even though he ‘tricked’ me with the calm attitude he had before I adopted him!
I hear ya on when you first get a pet – it’s stressful. Remember when I found my dog Sophia last year and I was also questioning my decision? It takes a while to bond with a new pet. Eventually you do though – you get to know their habits and personalities. I’m glad I have BOTH of my pups – they make my life so much more happy.
Give Eddie a big ol’ hug for me
oh eddie, he’s a doll! He’d get along great with my pups! Glad you are feeling better today.
Oh Eddie, you are such a handsome man! Such a happy story too (well except for the spending $500 on heartworm treatment) and I am sure he knows how good he has it. My dog was going to go to the Humane Society but I ended up taking him off the hands of my friends friends who were giving him away. They gave me some bs excuse that they were moving to his parents place and couldn’t take him but I heard once they moved, they got another dog
Sadness all the way since Lincoln isn’t perfect but he is a good boy.
This made me tear up! We rescued our pup 3 years ago and I constantly say it was the best thing I have ever “bought”. He was found wandering by the side of the highway at 8 weeks old. He as scared, timid, and had separation anxiety. The first time I saw him my heart melted! We had to drive him an hour home and he was petrified of all the semis (probably from being scared and confused by the side of a highway!). He had separation anxiety and it was hard to overcome. Now he is happy, and can be left alone. He is the best dog EVER. I can’t imagine my life without him.
Thanks Eddie for putting a smile on my face too
I don’t like cats either so I know why you were trying to suffocate it.
I love that picture of you and Lisa by the tree shaking hands. I know you and Boomer would get along great. She is an 11 year old lady but still loves to play. It would be like Boomer Got Her Groove Back
We got her from PetSmart when she was about 6 months old.
adoption stories are the greatest. I rescued mine from the human society (we don’t have a pound in my town) and she is the brunt of my world. living and working alone is a hard thing so to have a living breathing and (even raging) loving furry thing to come home to is the best. my dad says she’s just like me, has attitude. I disagree; i think she’s just spastic sometimes.
I’m in love with Eddie..he’s so wonderfully adorable and that face melts me!
I have adopted several animals. I was actually a foster parent for kittens while living in LA and one of the kittens was up for adoption but ended up contracting a deadly virus so they were going to put him down. They knew to call me and I adopted him, which meant keeping him quarantined in my (only) bathroom for 2 weeks and feeding him with a syringe 3x’s a day AND I had to completely change clothes every time I touched him because the virus could get to my other cat. Neci is now 6 years old
Eddie is adorable and you, my friend, are gorgeous! When you get tired of your perfect hair and skin please don’t hesitate to send it my way.
Look at Eddie. I love it – especially him squeezed in that bed and the day you adopted him! Great story – i’m so happy for you and glad you have Mr. Eddie to brighten your day. I know my Reuben and Remy make me so happy!
Wow, you make me sound like a total meanie!!! At least it helped in your relationship with Eddie. You know I am not a dog person but I doo love Eddie. He’s the MAN!!!
awww Eddie seems like such a sweet dog. I love the picture of him suffocating the cat. It’s hilarious!
Eddie is so cute! I adopted my basset hound Deeter when I was in college, 5 1/2 years ago. He was always my constant source of amusement. When I was down, he could always make me laugh. He died this past summer of cancer and it was so hard. I had to take some time but I hope to adopt again next summer. I will always miss him.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH i <3 this flashback. eddie is the biggest sweetie. i just want to squeeze him. marshall has been looking on the adoption website.. he wants a dog for christmas. i can't do three dogs.. but he is pretty convincing.
once again.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! i hope your day was great. i love you.
My husband and I adopted two cats from a local shelter. We thought they were healthy but between the two of them, we ended up spending nearly 1k. They had ear mites, ringworm, a respitory infection, and did I say ringworm? It took nearly a year for them to become healthy cats, but now they’re super happy and loveable. So I think it was worth it!
Aw, Eddie is adorable!
Once I’m in a place where I can have a dog I’m definitely adopting. I don’t know when that will be, but I can’t wait!
Until people have a pup, they can’t understand how much you could possibly love them! I love your pictures, within the next day or two I’ll be posting about my little pup Cole with tons and tons of pictures!
On another note, I hope things turn around for you. You deserve it! Finals are almost done, and being home myself I can’t tell you how much more relaxing it is. GOODLUCK!
Also, I posted our family Pumpkin Roll recipe and whenever I smell my mom baking it I can’t help but be in a better mood, ESPECIALLY when I get to eat it
It’s a yummy Christmas treat!
Aww, what sweet pictures of you and your pup!! He sounds like such a doll.
We have adopted 2 cats from the shelter, and both died horrible, painful deaths shortly after we got them. I think the shelter (at least the one near us) was not vaccinating properly, or else skipping basic care – the kitties both seemed like they died of the same thing, so I think it must have been a disease they caught there. Anyways, I’m glad their last few weeks of life were in a comfortable home where they were loved rather than at the shelter!
I’m literally dying for a dog. I can’t wait to get one. Hopefully in about six months, and no matter what I’m going to rescue.
Eddie is just the cutest pup ever! I love how curled up into a ball he is in the bed. So cute
We adopted our little April about 6 months ago. She is a 1.5 years old German Shepherd / Corgi mix that was a rescue from South Carolina. She’s definitely been trying on us (have I mentioned her energy level?), but she is also the sweetest dog in the world.
this post was sooooo sweet. You are so wonderful to adopt him and give him a good home. I love the picture of you shaking his paw. hahaha! He looks so human!
