Flashback Friday: Felicity

by Lisa on February 5, 2011 · 40 comments

This was me my freshman year of college…

And this is what I was constantly watching and obsessed with my freshman year of college…

If Felicity Porter were a real person…we might have been best friends.

I absolutely love this show. We would spend hours in my dorm room with all the girls on the hall watching Felicity. Debating over Ben or Noel.

They don’t make down to earth shows like this anymore for teenage girls. We got to see Felicity as a young, awkward high school graduate who was obsessed with a boy. She moved to New York City for him…and found herself in the process. I loved that she was always thinking. She always willing to put herself out there…even if she might get hurt. She was also never afraid to stick up for herself and what she deserved.

Plus, there were some great characters on the show…

Oh hey there sexy Ben Covington…you can guess that he was favorite. Even though he was an idiot and didn’t see how great Felicity was for the majority of the show…there’s something about a somewhat bad boy who just won’t give ya what you want.

Oh…and Noel. The cute amazing guy that was the smart choice. But, not necessarily the right choice.

Megan…the crazy roommate who ended up being such a blessing for Felicity. I loved when she was a phone sex operator. Brilliant.

And the boss I always wished I could have…

The show also provided some great insights and quotes…most coming from Felicity’s friend..Sally. Sadly, we never got to see Sally’s face.

I’m learning little by little that we decide what our lives are gonna be. Things happen to us. But it’s our reactions that matter. – Sally

I’ve become a real believer in not defining every single thing. Seems like everytime you think you’ve figured out what something is, it just becomes something else. – Sally

Our best decisions, the ones that we never regret, come from listening to ourselves. – Sally

Sometimes in a relationship, going through hell isn’t so bad if you come out of it a little stronger.

I started watching this show on my Snow Days. The beginning of her Sophomore season really resonates with me and what’s going on in my life.

This clip is pretty much exactly what I said to Sean in so many ways…I realized I could no longer compromise parts of myself or what I wanted to be with someone. That’s not the way it’s supposed to be.

And plus…I love that they put this in the show. What a great role model for young women! Be strong..stick up for your self and what you want and deserve. Felicity was in LOVE with Ben…but she was in love with herself more.

Her moment with Ben led to the most shocking haircutting scene in TV history. I loved what she says in this clip while getting her haircut…

Were you a Felicity fan?

Has there ever been a show that has really stuck with you?

I haven’t seen Felicity but I’ll check for it on Netflix. Hope your weekend is starting off ok!

I loved “Felicity.” I watched every episode, even after Keri Russell hacked her hair off.

You were gorgeous then…you are gorgeous now. I’d be jealous if you weren’t such a sweet person my friend!

Have a wonderful weekend!

I loved watching Felicity. I always wanted to dress like her and even planned a trip to NYC just so I can wear my Felicity clothes, lol! Even to this day, my friends and I refer to our cold weather clothes “Felicity clothes”.

My So Called Life on MTV was a show I liked, but back in high school…Beverly Hills 9021o was the one I recorded all the time on VHS

okay I think I’m going to put this show on to fall asleep to right now…

I’m glad you’re sticking up for yourself :)

I re-watch it every few years as well. I’m still amazed that I can get something different from the show every time I watch it. I guess that truly shows you how your life is always changing and different things will stick out to you depending on where your life is. And yes–Ben was oh so sexy. Those lips did it for me. The lips and the hair.

I definitely loved Dawson’s Creek when I was in HS…that was a big one during my HS years. During college, I looooved Gilmore girls. Actually, I loved that show in HS too– and I still do :)

Felicity looks like a show that I would enjoy. Maybe I can find the seasons somewhere. Did they make them in VHS or DVD form?

Good job for standing up for yourself, and not willing to compromise your feelings for someone else. You are strong. :)

I’m so obsessed with Felicity. And Ben Covington. And Javier. Last year, I re-watched all the seasons and it was just as good as I remembered. Maybe better.

Another show that’s really stuck with my is “Everwood” – I might have to re-watch that one too. :-)

I never really watched Felicity, I’m the One Tree Hill generation=) I still watch it! A few people did mention Party of Five and I watched that with my Mom but I was pretty little so I can’t remember too much plot=/

I never watched any of those shows because I am much older than most of you. I did watch those clips though and the first one pretty much sums up your relationship.

Haha, I LOVE this! You know I totally agree with it all!

In college we always watched Sex and the City when we weren’t out because I had the entire series. I definitely go back and watch it after breakups too.

I watched Felicity for awhile and loved it.

LOVE Felicity! I found the first two seasons mega-cheap a while back, and the other two seasons are in my Netflix queue. I was in college at the same time Felicity was, which felt like kind of “symbolic” to me and my friends. :-D

I too am a big My So-Called Life fan. I’m still not over the fact that it was cancelled.

Where’d you find them so cheap? I really need to get sophmore and senior year! I’m missing those!

Reply

Anita February 6, 2011 at 5:49 pm

I found them for $10 per season at a video store (I bought them used, but they totally work fine and I’ve never had a problem w/them). They’re pretty cheap on amazon too -$22 per season plus free shipping. Or check Target or Best Buy maybe. Good luck!

Boy was I ever obsessed with Felicity!!! I think I cried when they took that show off the air. They seriously need another one like it…nothing compares now! I started liking Keri Russell during Malibu Shores and then fell in love with Felicity. I’m getting all nostalgic now.. :)

Adored Felicity and love Keri Russell in general. I even loved it when she cut her hair – I wanted to be able to do that!

Gosh that totally brought me back, I forgot about my love of Felicity!! Wonder what happened to the actor who played Ben? He was so hot but him not being able to express himself or grow up definitely made him not so cute for me!
That scene is so touching, and I’m SO glad you are finally at a place where you could be so strong and not compromise any part of yourself!! I hope that both of you are doing OK, breakups are nauseatingly tough.

I was also totally obsessed with Felicity– How could one show know my life so well? Well…kind of…I loved watching it for a while, but then the angst got so real that I had to take a break! I still love it though.

Amanda @ GroffsGirl February 7, 2011 at 10:38 pm

I don’t know how I just stumbled upon this, but it is SO weird. I was thinking about this show as I was driving to work today….SO OBSESSED!! I was in love with Ben and Noel got on my nerves a l’il bit! I loved Felicity and all of her emotion and intensity. I used to think WWFD?? I have tried to find these on DVD so many times (I am in Japan) and cannot. I think this was a sign I should just order all of the seasons!! PS. I love your blog, you are toooooo cute!! Your title is funny because I say I am an ‘Okie’ because I live in Okinawa, Japan!! Can’t wait to see more of your blog :)

haha–I used to have those same thoughts. I love that Felicity made mistakes…a lot of them. But she ALWAYS learned from it and grew.

Caitlin February 8, 2011 at 6:45 pm

I have never watched Felicity. Not one second.

I just watched the clip about her hair (I definitely remember this being a HUGE deal) and decided to add it to my Netflix queue. Then I discovered I can only “save” the first season which would lead me to believe I will have to go buy it. You have ignited what I think may be a very bad habit. I’ve always loved Kerri Russell and of course am obsessed with NYC.

Speaking of both – have you seen KR in “Waitress”? Please do it right now if you haven’t.

And NYC is home to “my” show: SATC. I have the whole series and also get something different from it whenever I watch.

Let’s plan a trip to our beloved city and stalk out our fictional BFFs.

Hugs!

Yes…I love what you said about being brave. It’s so easy to just follow things because you are too afraid of change. You have to go for what you want.

Shena April 21, 2011 at 2:50 pm

And the moral of the story is…don’t cut your hair when you are upset or need a change. Cut it when you are happy and think it will look cute. And do it gradually. My huge, change haircuts were always traumatic. Now I just change the color. You can always change it back.

Reply

lisaou11 April 21, 2011 at 3:32 pm

Haha! Very true. I’m guilty of that–I darkened my hair after a break up in college! It was a bit too dramatic for me.
