Flashback Friday: Injury waiting to happen

by Lisa on February 11, 2011 · 30 comments

My first test of the semester is done and out of the way! Hallejuah. That means I am one step closer to being done with my prerequisites and getting into Nursing School. That deserves a HELL YES.

Many of you mentioned that I’m a strong lady after reading my break-up story.

Let me just tell you that I’ve had a lot of practice learning to be strong and persevering…

That’s because I’m injury prone and crazy medical things always seem to be happening to me. Seriously, this started at the age of 2 and has pretty much continued on through adulthood. I seem to have the curse.

It all started at the age of 2 when I had to have my first surgery…

I had chronic ear issues and had 7 surgeries from age 2 to 7. I even started talking much later than the average child simply because my hearing wasn’t up to par.

Broken humerous bone. I dropped something out of my highchair, reached back to get it, and stuck my arm in between the bars of my chair. Sure enough, the highchair came tumbling down breaking my arm.

First real gymnastics injury. I loved having a cast and I felt like a hardcore badass. This was some kind of torn ligament in my ankle.

You can read all about this fun injury here. I tore my heel in half and ruptured my achilles tendon. This was a very long recovery filled with a ton of physical therapy and about 4 different casts. Fun times.

My kitten, Stormy, entertained me for long hours sitting in that chair.

Looks like I ate healthy during my recovery. Nothing like a bottle of Sunny D and a 100 Grand Bar to keep your body in the healing mode.

I broke both ankles at the same time and got the joy of being in a wheelchair for a month.

Please don’t mind the belly shirt paired with pajama pants. It’s a sexy look, I know. I broke my hand and disjointed my finger in cheerleading in highschool. I had to walk around flipping everybody off all day long.

There are many many more that I sadly can’t find pictures too…but for a short (ok, long) rundown here we go.

  • 7 surgeries on my ears
  • torn ligament in my ankle
  • stress fracture in both wrists (at the same time)
  • broke both ankles (at the same time)
  • ruptured Achilles tendon and broken heel bone
  • Broken hand and disjointed middle finger
  • Appendectomy (I got my appendix removed)
  • Locked my SI joint in my back and couldn’t move for a few days
  • Broken arm

The list goes on and on. I’m thankful I never had any knee problems. Fingers crossed.

So, ya see, I’m resilient. I remember I would always be getting back to my old level at gymnastics and then right when I’d get there..I’d have another injury. Another setback. It took all I had to not give up and keep pushing forward. I’ve been pushed down more times than I can count. Each time I’ve  gotten back up. My history with injuries taught me so much about pushing through when life gets hard.

Life’s been hard…but I’ve fought and plowed through every second of the last two months and came out on top.

Good lord you were injury prone! Somehow I made it through 10 years of gymnastics without breaking anything. Although I did have tons of torn muscles, sprains, and all that crap.

Wow girl! That is a lot to go through, especially at such a young age! Hopefully no more injuries in the near future! I’ve broken many things in my time, but luckily a bone or body part have never been one of them.

Also, your little kitty is seriously the cutestttt thing!

Wow! That’s a lot of injuries. I’m sorry but I did have a giggle at your bandaged middle finger. What are the chances? And the picture with the cat under the bottle of Sunny D is adorable :-) Stay safe!

I was telling somebody today how you tortured that kitten. You would not let him get away from you or even out of the chair. Too cute! I remember it all – so which is worse physical hurt or emotional hurt and which one do you think is or will be easier to get over?

Wow, you are definitely a fighter! I am so so accident prone and have some crazy stories of my own, but luckily (knock on wood) I have never broken a bone!

How in the world did you break BOTH ankles at the same time?

PS, love the kitty pic! Too cute!

Lisa- I think all of that is going to make you a fantastic nurse. You are resilient and wow, you’ll be able to relate to your patients. I currently am trying to heal from an injury with my bum ankle and felt encouraged by your words. My feet are flat as the land of northern Texas :) and have always given me a problem- this time from walking too much on the beach! Seriously. Hang in there with the break up and carry on being your fabulous self.

Oh Dear Lord! You need to take care of yourself – get plenty of calcium or something! I’ve never broken a bone EVER (and this despite my high level of activity all throughout childhood), so I can’t even imagine! This is crazy!

YEa for being one step closer to nursing school. I graduated from nursing school almost 3 yrs ago. I remember all the work to get there. You can do it- keep it up!

You did seem to have a “few” injuries as a kid, but getting back up is the go!
