I’m giving the floor to my wonderful mama. Please give her some love! I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday!
Hi! I’m Lisa’s mother and I am back for another guest post. I loved writing my previous guest post. I have never considered myself much of a writer, but I can see why blogging could be fun!
First of all, I would like to thank all of you for such a wonderful response; I was overwhelmed with your positive comments. What a wonderful community of support your all have.
Some of you actually revealed your age in the comment section of my last guest post. It is refreshing to know that there are a few “older” women blogging. I think that’s very refreshing. I believe that this generation will have a lot of tough decisions to make in their lifetime.
Did you ever wonder why people are so obsessed with everyday normal activities like eating, deciding what to wear, how to fix your hair, what kind of car to get, etc. All of these things in the end are very trivial. It wasn’t that long ago that we worried about was where our next meal would come from. We have gotten so out of line in this country it is laughable sometimes. That is another post though.
Today, I want to talk to all ages about preparing for the future (and growing older) emotionally and physically. I will begin with my story.
Growing up as a young adult, I did all the taboo things. I worshiped the sun, I started smoking at the age of 13, did drugs shortly after. Even with all that I was blessed with great health, a great body (I never worked out a day in my life until I was 45) with absolutely no effort at all. I ate what I wanted blah blah blah. I was the girl everybody hated because I put zero effort into myself and still had a great body. It did finally catch up with me and now I can say, “I sure wish I would have done things differently”.
What did I wish I knew then that I know now?
1. Having a drop dead gorgeous tan is NOT worth it. Always use sunscreen. We all need some direct sunlight for our exogenous Vitamin D, but you get that in your normal time outside. And please do not bake in a tanning bed.
2. Exercise. A healthy amount of exercise throughout your entire life will help you in more ways than you know. I am quite sure that if I was stretching and exercising on a regular basis my arthritis would be much more manageable now.
3. Eat healthy. Healthy home grown foods will help your immune system be strong to fight off all the bacteria that is around us all the time. MRSA, Strep, and all the other bacteria you hear of is not new it is just attacking in different ways.
4. Try your best not to get too caught up going to the doctor for every little ailment. They will give you drugs to alleviate the symptoms. Most of the time our bodies will handle it. I am not saying you should not go to the Doctor. I work in the medical profession so I do promote that, but we have to be reasonable.
5. Laugh, Cry, Love and Dream. We are empty shells without emotions. Allow yourselves to be goofy, it is the best thing you can do for yourself.
Think about your body and compare it your heart to the engine in a car. There are certain things you do to keep your car in good running condition. Your body is the same except for this one thing.
The body is the most exquisite machine you could ever imagine. Your heart will beat 2.5-3 billion times if you live to be 72. Do you know of anything else that runs perfectly without interruption for as long as our bodies do?
As of 2007 the average life expectancy is 77.9 years.
It’s time to start taking care of the one and only body you will ever have.
What do you do to help yourself age gracefully?

I finally stopped tanning, wear sunscreen excessively and workout and eat healthy!

Hi Mama Okie! I love the metaphor of treating your heart like an engine. You’ve got to keep up with the maintenance to keep it running smoothly! I’ve always done the sunscreen thing, but in the last few years, I’ve really made exercising a priority not just to be fit and thin, but to maintain my overall health. Taking care of yourself feels so good! And I agree with what you said about laughing, crying, loving, dreaming . . . that’s what keeps us really feeling alive. There really is something to the saying that laughter is the best medicine–even if taken as a vitamin of sorts!
Loved your post! I think wisdom learned from life experience is so valuable. I wonder if you could do another on mental health and well-being?

Thank you for the kind words. I do believe mental health is a huge part of looking great from the inside out:)
What an awesome post! Thanks Mama Okie
To age gracefully…MOISTURIZE. This is something my mother always told me was the key to looking young and she was definitely right! At 50 years old, she still doesn’t have a single wrinkle…lucky for me I have those genes!

mama okie – what a fabulous post! i think we all need these reminders, and i especially like the one about emotion. i used to think being emotional was a bad thing, but now i am realizing that emotions – both happy, sad, mad, angry, etc. – remind us we are indeed HUMAN. have a great weekend!!
What a great post Mama Okie! Very true about keeping our hearts healthy. I wish I would have told my young teenager self to wear sunscreen! I am now though atleast!!
Hi Mama Okie! I love this post. I agree that it’s funny how much we focus on what we eat and wear in the blog world. We complain that Whole Foods is out of canned pumpkin while millions of Americans scrape together change to buy a sandwich for dinner.
I’m with Stephanie above, moisturize! I’m 31 and my mom always told me that no matter what, always moisturize your face, hands and feet. I never have cracked or dry skin so I’m glad she stressed that.

Such a great post!!! Love the advice.
Thank you! What a beautiful post and some great advice. I cringe whenever a friend goes to the tanning bed. It’s not worth it!
I absolutely believe what you say about going to the doctor. Each time I go, they are quick to give me a medication, but don’t spend any time on perhaps getting more vitamins, changing the way I eat, etc. Very great point.
Great post Mama Okie! I definitely try to take care of myself. I eat well, exercise and try to make the most out of life. I need to be better about sunscreen though.
I love this post! I’m only 25 but I think about aging all the time. Maybe because I’m at that point where I’m starting to notice it a little more (umm… I SO can’t function on 4 hours sleep like I used to). I also used to smoke and wasn’t active at all in my teens and early 20s, so I’m trying my best to reverse that. For me, apart from caring for my skin, eating well and exercising, I try to live as stress free as possible. I think stress has a huge effect on how our bodies age!

For all I did I should look like a shriveled up person. I smoked from the age of 13 until I was 47 except for 7 years around the age of 25-32. Smoking is the absolute worst thing you can do for your whole body health. You are so lucky you quit young.
Thank you so much for sharing your advice! As of right now I am trying to eat helahty and make exercise an important part of my life. I don’t drink or smoke so I’m good there, too! I also get facial about 4 or 5 times a year which is great for your skin, I’m on 21 and I already have wrinkles! They’re not from excessive tanning as far as I know because, to my dismay, I am very pale and always use sunscreen!

I don’t know if you know this but blondes or redheads with fair skin, the skin is actually thinner and will damage much easier. So take care of it now:)
What a great post! I moisturize more than I ever used to, I feel it’s important for maintaining my skin!

It’s so nice to hear this! I stopped tanning, exercise often, and eat healthy because I believe it will help me age more gracefully, but at age 23 it is hard to convince my girlfriends of the same. They live by the “whatever happens happens” mindset, and this post will be great for them to read!

once I finally stopped smiling at that adorable picture, I really took those messages to heart. I need to slather on some more sunscreen big time!

Gotta love the hair in that pic!!
Excellent post!!! I was rough on the skin with my skin tanning ways, but now know how damaging it is! I don’t smoke or drink, I workout 5-6 days a week, I chant/meditate and I am really changing how I eat and nourish my body!! Not to mention, I am alloyed the Oil of Olay Regenerist skin care line
. Glad to get your words of wisdom, easy to see where your daughter gets her smarts
Great post Mama Okie!! Your advice is much appreciated and dead-on! I’m started turning around my eating and exercise habits in hopes of looking great now – and in the future. My mom looks young for her age because she works out 6 days a week and stays away from the sun (she’s fairskinned) – I want to be the same!

This is really sweet, and wonderful advice for everyone! I could definitely use some work on the sunscreen front but I’m not an intense sunshine baker, I just need to be more diligent at applying whenever I’m outside. It’s hard! This summer will be the true test
I exercise most days and eat healthy on a regular basis, I keep my skin clean and moisturized, I try to get a good amount of sleep most nights and I’m aiming only to keep working on and improving all those good healthy habits as the time go on.

I LOVED this guest post Lisa…and Mama Okie!!
Did you go tanning a lot when you were younger?
I really need to start stretching and that really put into perspective that all us hott young ladies will all get old and still have the SAME bodies we are ( sometimes damaging) taking care of right now and that we need to take care of them PROPERLY!
If you mean to a tanning bed – NO – they were not around back then but I worshipped the sun everyday in the summer I would lay out with oil on and literally back myself all day everyday. I had this purple bikini with pink hippo’s on it that I just loved (LOL).
Stretching will keep your body limber and that is a tremendous help when you get older.
Thank you Mama Okie for the wonderful advice! Your daughter is SO lucky to have you! Makes me miss my mama!
(I’m away at college)
ao happy to have mama okie post!! what a wonderful post…I think there is some gene that moms have that just make them know EVERYTHING. You and most moms i know are wise beyond their years
Hey mama okie!
Thanks so much for this post! As I think I’ve mentioned in your last post, my mom died of breast cancer when I was 13. Although my dad has been wonderful, let’s face it; he’s not a woman so I lack a wiser woman in my life to guide me about having my “wobbly bits” sag and what to watch out for.
I hate to admit that most of my life has been plagued by an awful eating disorder and general hatred towards my body. I really wish I had.my mother tell me it’s ok to have boobs and hips and cellulite.
Anyhow you are more than welcome to do a guest post on my blog any day!
Eden recently posted..Guest Post- Sure Fire Ways to Be a Superstar “Health” Blogger!
It is more than okay to have boobs, hips and cellulite. I hope that you have tackled the eating disorder – I have never had anything like that and have always had a good body image so I cannot speak from experience. What I can say is that this country places far toooooo much emphasis on how we look instead of who we are. We are to be loved from the inside out the the outside in:)
Wonderful post Mama Okie
I have been telling my friends not to tan for about seven years now. I am completely against it after my dad’s experience with skin cancer and have been layering on the sunscreen EVERYDAY since! I still get embarrassed about my albino legs but I just try to remind myself it will be worth it in the long run!
Love you lots!

How nice of you to do a guest post for Lisa! Thanks for sharing your wisdom. My mom told me to always put lotion on not only your face, but also your neck. Hopefully that will help with the inevitable wrinkles later on. You have a supercool daughter and I see where she gets it from.
Take care!

What great advice. I’m trying to start working out, not for the sake of bikini season, well that helps! but, mostly because I want to live a long and healthy life. Thanks for reminding me of that.
Great post! Over the last few years, I have made tweaks to my diet to add more healthy options. I can’t even imagine going back to the years where I subsisted off of pizza rolls and potato chips! I also have incorporated exercise into my weekly routine…something I never did when I was younger. I wish I could have started living this way years ago since I feel so much better and have a ton of energy, but I guess you have to start somewhere, huh?
Hope you are having a great weekend!

THis is such agreat post! I love seeing something from your mother! I wear sunscreen everyday, and I semi-started wearing anti-aging creams too (at night) and no tanning booths and eat well and work out! I think aging is a beautiful process, I just don’t want mine to start before it needs to :-p lol
