It’s a special morning when you get to spend time with your family. It’s even better when you get to spend time with them doing something active.
That’s right…my family and I ran a 5k this morning.
My church was hosting a 5k to raise money for some neighborhoods in Oklahoma City and we were quick to participate. My brother just started Body for Life (just finished week 1) and being active is really important to him. Even better, my nephew came. He’s 15 and I love that we were all able to spend quality time with him. He even acted like he had fun. (you know how 15 year old boys can be).
To be honest, I really didn’t want to go to this. It meant I had to wake up early and I desperately wanted to sleep in. I just couldn’t turn down a run with my brother and nephew since I rarely get to see them.
We arrived around 8 am and it was already 85 degrees. At 9am, it was even hotter. I can’t take this Oklahoma heat. We have 100 + for the next week at least. Even running in 85 degree weather was difficult. I was quickly reminded why I don’t like to run in the summer unless it’s at 6 am.
It was a small race and check-in was quick and efficient.
As much as I hated getting up early for this, I was happy when I was there. Most of all, it was great to see my nephew active and outdoors. I worry about him sometimes–good to see him doing something with the family.
This wasn’t a competitive race for me whatsoever. I wanted to stick with my family and just enjoy my time with them.
The day got better when I ran into my friend Jordan whom I hadn’t seen in ages. I was a bridesmaid in her wedding and she just had a baby not too long ago and she brought along her little guy and ran/walked the race with her. I spent about 3/4 of the race running/walking with her and just catching up.
The race ended on a high note when my brother, nephew, Jordan and I sprinted across the finish line.
I ran a half marathon on May 1st, but dang, your running endurance sure goes away quick when you take a break. Perhaps it’s time to get on the ball and add a couple steady state runs in during the week.
Fantastic way to kick off the weekend.
It’s time to hit the books now. Story of my life…
Hope your Saturday is going just as good!

So nice to run with family
I wish I could get my fam to run in a race with me. My goal is to get my dad to go to the gym with me next time I’m home…Small steps
Good luck with the studying!
Aw that looks like such an awesome day! When I’m home I love going for walks with my mom or going to the gym with her! Hope your studying goes well
.
im so jealous! i wish my family would run with me!!
your so lucky!!!
good luck with your studying—i feel ya..studying the night away for me too
Awesome! Nothing better than doing something active with the fam!
I ran a 5k this morning too! Although, it wasn’t that hot out. LUkcily you still had a good time, and being with the family is a plus! I wish my family was more active.
I don’t blame you for not looking forward to getting up early. Looks like you had a great time, though!
Yay for fun saturday runs especially with the fam(definitely a huge plus)! This has been a great weekend so far! Im attempting to wake up EARLY for a long run, hopefully its not as windy and miserable at 630….
Yes, well I did not run much. It appears I am not in very good cardio shape – just cant run!!!! Feet hurt, shins hurt but I had a great time with the kids and I was not in last place:)
running is a whole different ballgame–you have cardio endurance for other things!
I just ran my first 5k in April, and I hope to run another…and possibly a 10k, we will see. I used to HATE running, so even 5k was a big deal and I felt super proud of myself for doing it. I ran by myself though, it would be awesome to run with friends and family!
That sounds like an awesome day, Lisa! Congrats on your races!!
I’m running a 1/2 marathon tomorrow morning…it’s my second ,but I’m still pretty nervous! Any song recommendations?
Looks like a fun day. Great job to your fam!
I am not a runner by any means but I signed up for the Air Force Half Marathon in September. I lived in Oklahoma for 7 years, moved back to Texas, and let me tell you, the heat is horrible here. Its been 100+ with no rain for weeks. I work 7:30 to 4:30, I have to get up to get self and kids dressed at 6am. I just cant drag myself to run in the heat to train.
I refuse to run in weather that isn’t between 55-65 degrees. Otherwise, I freeze or get overheated. Okay, that’s just me being dramatic, but you get the idea
Sounds like a fun race and a great way to spend time with the family for a good cause!
Some of my favorite family memories are the ones I did races with my parents and sister! I’m glad you got to experience the same thing. The photos are great!
Hope you’re enjoying some time despite all the studying! Just keep the goal in mind-it’s all worth it in end!
Sounds like a great time. I ran 3.1 miles this morning too but it was just around a local park : )
Good luck hitting the books! Study hard
Sounds like a great race!
awww that’s so cute that you all ran together. And awesome that you got to catch up with your friend!
Looks like your weekend was a great one! I literally just started training for my first 5k ever this am…eeeek!
Have a great week at class
what a great way to start off the weekend! I really want to run a race soon!
What a fantastic way to spend time with family! I love when friends and family get involved and do those kinds of things together
Sounds like a great way to start the weekend, even if it was at the cost of waking up early. I bet you felt accomplished and happy once it was all over. That’s how I felt after my gym session on Sunday morning.
Glad you had a nice race, minus the hot weather! That’s one thing I don’t miss from the deep south when I lived in GA…the heat really got to me!!
that sounds like so much fun! I wish I could sucker my family into running a race with me. they’re all either too lazy to get up to run or too old to do that much legwork.
