One of my favorite things about my new-found love for Crossfit is that I get to do it with my mom.
After I raved about it for a few weeks, she decided to stop in to a Sunday afternoon WOD to test it out for herself. I think she wanted to kill me immediately after, but she loved it. She had to get over the fact that her throat hurt for a few days (she sucked in A LOT of oxygen during that workout) though.
Yesterday after class and after work, we both headed up to Crossfit Native for the WOD (Workout of the Day).
A majority of the Crossfit WOD’s have women’s name and “Helen” is one of them.
Helen
Three rounds for time
400 m run
21 Kettlebell swings
12 pullups
It was a tough one. My lungs were burning (the cooler air didn’t help), but people were there to push me forward and I did my best.
I love being able to give my mom a high-five as we run past each other and then cheer her on to a great finish. I’m grateful that my mom is willing to try new things–even if she is afraid she can’t do them. She always just goes for things without thought and she’s always been an inspiration of mine.
(These pictures are me are a few weeks old and not from yesterday’s workout).
I showed her these pictures and she made a face. She told me she thought that her butt and arms looked big. I told her that I wished she could see what others see in her. All I see in those pictures is a strong woman who has the courage to try something difficult and a little out of the box.
Thankfully, she came around to seeing that same thing.

Lisa, my dear, your words are kind. I know that I don’t look bad for my age and I am proud of myself for finishing each and every crossfit workout. All I have to say is “the things I get myself into!”
Has anybody else out there done this workout. I would be interested in know your times. Just curious. I believe I finished last in our group and that’s okay, I finished.

You have me wanting to try Crossfit so badly!
And Denise – you look AWESOME! And you inspire me too. Even though we have never met, I think of you like a mentor/second mom through knowing Lisa.
Which means, Lisa…I view you as a sister. And I miss you!!! We need a chat and soon.

both you & your mom are awesome for doing this! sounds so challenging. i think one of my short term goals is to try new workout classes, even if it means a yoga or pilates, since i am such a dreadmill whore.
Go mom! That’s so awesome and I’m so proud of her. My mom is in really poor health and it just breaks my heart

Your mom is amazing! My mom recently started doing yoga (yes, she even bought the pants), and I couldn’t be more proud of her.
I was directed to your blog from Peanut Butter Fingers aka my blog obsession, and I am now a loyal reader of your blog, too! I am a journalism student, and I love hearing about your adventures in nursing school because they are so totally opposite from my class-related stories.
I’m looking forward to your next post!

Thanks all of you for the kind words. Being critical of oneself affects all generations, I really never had issues until I turned 50 but it is all part of “maturing” my body is simply not 25 anymore but I can have the best over 50 body around right???
I think that its fabulous you and your mom are doing it together!
Mom- You rock!!
Wow, great workout! I’ve been wanting to try crossfit. Maybe I just need to find some crossfit-style workouts I can do at home.

You and your mom could pass as sisters! Mad props to your momma for CrossFitting with you – that is so awesome and a testament to real strength. I love seeing moms crossfit and work out – it reminds me that age is just a number (not that your mom is old or anything – she certainly doesn’t look it.) Great job on Helen!
