I grew up doing gymnastics for over 10 years and even almost made it to the elite level–but fell a bit short.
I’ve always thought that gymnastics has a big impact on the way my body works now. Gymnastics is a high-intensity short duration sport. You sprint towards the vault, hurdle, and the skill is over in less then 30 seconds.
A bar routine takes power and grace and is over in a minute or so. Floor is the longest exercise and it’s still a few minutes at best.
I work best in short bursts. I live giving it everything I have and working at a high intensity. That’s probably a big reason why my body (and my mind) hated my short attempt at distance running.
I’ve gone through a lot of phases with fitness over the past four years. I’ve done the running thing (hated it and honestly wasn’t good), the weight room thing where I spend my time doing boring bicep curls and routines filled with isolated movements, and I’ve spent my time doing the treadmill and elliptical bit.
Crossfit feels like it fits. Movements come natural to me. Movements like kipping pull ups, ring dips, handstand walks, handstand push-ups all make me feel like I’m home. It’s a beautiful thing when the body is able to work as one functional unit—just as it’s meant to.
Even more than that, I love the people at my Crossfit box. I went to Breckenridge for a week last week and actually missed them. It’s like a big fun family.
You can see why it’s important to me to continue doing Crossfit into my pregnancy.
There are many many awe-inspiring pregnant women out there who have rocked Crossfit when pregnant.
I’ve turned to the trainers at Crossfit Native to guide me along the process. I’ve also turned to Crossfit Mom, an amazing website, that sets up WOD’s for pregnant women. It gives tips, guidelines, exercises substitutions, etc.
I’m still currently in the first trimester. The first trimester doesn’t mean many changes to your exercise routine. It’s generally noted that if you did it before you were pregnant that you can continue to do it during your pregnancy. Of course, slight modifications must be made.
Crossfit Mom recommends dropping weights on things like Olympic Lifts and kettle bell swings to 65%-75% of your normal weight.
In addition, I’ve been focusing on just generally taking it easier and keeping my heart rate down. I’ve been taking many more breaks in my WOD’s. In fact, my trainer and high school friend Kevin is somewhat of a Nazi when it comes to me taking breaks. He is always reminding me to stop and helping me pace myself which I really appreciate.
I make sure that I am always able to easily talk during the WOD and work to not become overly heated or overly exhaust myself.
There’s a lot of breaks and water sipping during my workout.
All that being said, I am currently still doing all movements with no substitutions and am enjoying these last few weeks of being able to do so.
Workout are much harder now. I seem to tucker out easier and quicker. My breathing and heart rate intensifies very quickly. It’s been a little hard mentally to take it easy because one of the best parts about Crossfit is giving it everything you have every single time.
I try to make it to the box 2-3 times a week, although, it’s usually more on the twice a week side. On other days, I just take walks outside with Eddie.
I always remind myself that pregnancy is not the time to raise my intensity or become quicker, faster, or stronger…but simply a time to maintain my fitness level for the health of myself and the baby.
I wanted to write this post just as a precursor into Crossfit during pregnancy because it it something you will see in my blog as the time goes on.

Love this Lisa! So funny, I have actually been working on a gymnastics post this afternoon. I have it on the brain after being home
I think it is so great that you are continuing to do Crossfit during your pregnancy! I can’t wait to hear about it as you go

Alright, Meggi, I commented. And I cried. Lovely.
I’m excited to watch you take on Crossfit during pregnancy! My husband and I are both Crossfitters, and although we’re not at the point of having kids yet, it is something out there in the future sometime and I’d like to continue doing Crossfit throughout pregnancy!

I’m so happy that you commented. I love finding more blogs about people who Crossfit.
I’m glad you are updating your blog! I’ve missed it!
I’ve recently gotten into Yoga and going to this Yoga studio in my area for “Hot Yoga” – it really just seems like “me” when I do it. I can’t get enough! It’s funny how our workouts have changed over the years…I like it that way, keeps things interesting
Definitely. I feel like if I dedicated enough time to Yoga that I’d really enjoy it. My grandmother was a Yoga instructor for years and I grew up around it. I have good flexibity and it does always feel incredibly good. It’s something I’d like to look into, that’s for sure.
Love and miss you Lindsey!
I CrossFitted all through my first pregnancy up until 39 weeks or so. I’m a runner too, but I had to abandon that 5 months in. CrossFit was the saving grace for this workout junkie. I started doing the regular WODs but eventually did the CrossFit Moms WODs in the latter stages of pregnancy. I was proud because I was still able to do the “advanced” Moms workouts while I was as big as a house.
The hardest thing for me initially was to slow myself down. It is so easy to get winded during WODs and watch your HR go into the stratosphere. I had to constantly remind myself that this wasn’t about building strength or getting faster anymore – just about maintaining so that I could come back strong. It sounds like you have your head on straight about this part.
Good luck to you!
Yes! The last paragraph you wrote is spot on. It’s very hard to slow myself down. I am still shocked at how quickly I am getting winded now and I have to constantly remind myself that this is not the time to “work through it.”
Going to check out your blog now!
I think it’s great you’re sticking with the routine while pregnant. That’s my hope for “Some Day.” I want to at least continue most of my current activities. I know that I can at BARE MINIMUM continue my swimming. But it’s important to me to continue weights too. Besides, we need strong arms because babies are HEAVY.

Wow that is so awesome that so many pregnant women continue with crossfit, and that there are safe ways to do it! And can I just say that I’m so happy you’re back to blogging! I have always loved the posts you do about your life and the things that happen, so I think that doing it as a way of journaling is awesome! I really want to try Crossfit out sometime. I just found out that a nearby Crossfit gym at school offers free sessions on Saturday mornings for people who are interested in trying it out…I think I’m gonna have to do that!

Wonderful to see you blogging again. I always find your posts insightful and often thought-provoking. You’re new crossfit obsession has totally inspired me. I so want to try it and can’t wait to move to a city that actually has a crossfit gym . . .
And screw the haters. Putting yourself out there online makes people feel that you’re asking to be criticized and the anonymity of computers makes it easy to be hateful and hurtful when that happens. I don’t always agree with you but totally appreciate yours and most of your readers respectful discussions to my differing opinions.
I clicked over here from my reader and realized that my comment was totally meant for your previous post. I’d delete it if I could but just take it in that context
Isn’t that the beauty of blogging? Being exposed to different ideas, ways of thinking or ways of doing things? That’s how I tend to view differing opinions or the way people choose to lead their lives.
I know I’ve said it many times before, but I’ll say it again. I’ve always really appreciated your comments. You’ve been a commenter who isn’t afraid to speak up or call me out on something. You’ve opened my eyes to a few things a few times and I appreciate that. You’ve always done it a respectful way and have generated some great discussions.
So, thank you, again.

Im so excited for you! I went thru a divorce a year and a half ago, met someone and was pregnant 4 months later, not planned. We feel so blessed to have our little 3 month old! Like you, bc of my struggles to get pregnant in the past, we didn’t think it was even possible so it’s even more exciting! Good luck to you! Let me know if you ever have any pregnancy/mommy questions since I’ve just been thru something similar! Congrats!!:)
Ah, thank you so much! I will have many questions for you (already do!) except some emails in the future!
Anytime!:)
I would do exactly the same thing as you, if it were me! Stick with my workouts as long as possible, hopefully throughout the entire pregnancy, because honestly, if you did it before, doing it during, with some modifications is just going to keep you strong and healthy for your baby! I commend it fully!

I am blessed to go through this with you, I think it is awesome that you will crossfit through your pregnancy. I am gonna have to start bringing my good camera so i can get AWESOME pictures of you, so that someday your child can look at them and say “wow mom you were good!”

So inspiring to hear you will continue to Crossfit while pregnant. I didn’t get serious about working out (besides my short stint as a high school soccer player..fail) until after having my little man. Once I got in a rhythm I was so mad at myself for not incorporating fitness into my life sooner!
Now fitness is so important to me & it’s important for me to teach my son that being active is necessary for a healthy lifestyle.
As nervous as I am to try it, Crossfit is on my checklist.

Are you still in Oklahoma City? If you are, you should come up to Native and give it a try! It’s free to just come to class and test it out to see how you like it a few times. I’d love that.
Okay, some of those extremely pregnant women are doing things that I totally couldn’t do now, even though I’m not pregnant!! Ha, ha. I’m slightly amazed… Anyway, I can’t wait to read your posts! It’s awesome that you’re taking it easy but yet still staying fit during your pregnancy!

Holy smokes! I missed reading your last post, what with writing Christmas exams and running around for the holidays. Congrats! That’s very exciting.

Getting tuckered out faster and heart rate spiking higher and faster are definitely 2 things I’ve noticed throughout my pregnancy too. Way to stick with it! Crossfit is something I definitely want to try, but since I wasn’t doing it pre-pregnancy I’m going to wait until after. For now I’ll stick with teaching cycle, body pump and hopefully getting some runs in. Have a great weekend!
Okay, your momma friend has to comment.
I won’t lie…seeing those major lifts being done by really pregnant women had me lifting an eyebrow. My first thought? “Dear God, what would she do if she dropped that?” I also wondered if you were going to continue on with CrossFit workouts.
With that said, I totally agree that “if you were doing it before you got pregnant, continue”. This is why I’m using this year to bust ass..because I’m not going for anymore kids after 31. (I like being a young-er mom, and I love having my kids be close in age.) With you being well aware, as a nurse, of how to take care of yourself during pregnancy, what’s good, what’s bad…I’m sure you know you’re making the best YOU decision.
You obviously don’t need me to say “be careful”…haha…but I think I just did.
If I didn’t know you, I’d totally be keeping my mouth shut.
Keep doing your thing, momma, because it’s going to be crucial to your SANITY, health, and to when you’re getting back in there post-pregnancy. PS: you’re glowing.
Melissa @ Live, Love, & Run recently posted..The most important lesson of 2011.
The weights in Crossfit can be a little misleading. Those plates are probably around 5-10 lbs a piece. Pretty light. However, I will be following the guidelines that Crossfit mom put out—and doing what I can and can’t do. I won’t do anything I don’t think I should.
I love you!
I have been out of the blog world for a while, but check back in to my faves regularly. Being one of those faves, I just wanted to be sure to say congrats on the bun in the oven! And kuddos for continuing the exercise. I’m 27wks with my first and have continued to run and do yoga (though I had to quit the hot kind) and can attest you will feel so much better having kept it up. It’s good for you and the baby both. I have been lucky to get almost to the 3rd trimester with little of the aches and pains slot of women complain of and I think staying active has played a huge role in that. Congrats again!
I’m so glad you are blogging again. I found your blog shortly before you stopped and was so disappointed because I really enjoy it. I started doing CrossFit this summer and am totally hooked. I definitely want to continue it when pregnant (hopefully not anytime soon though!) and can’t wait to read about your experiences.
Crossfit mom was my SAVIOR when I was pregnant…it was the only thing that kept me comfortable towards the last part of it. You will love it…good luck!

I felt the same way when I found kettlebells. It just fit. I like the short intense workouts, how kettlebells flow, and using my body as an unit. Isolation work bores and makes little sense to me in every day life. I’m not a runner physically or mentally. A good friend of mine is a CF trainer and the few times I’ve gone to her gym it’s been fun. She always refers to her CF crew as family too. Very cool!

This is so interesting, Lisa! Thanks for sharing. I know that many active women continue to workout through first trimester, and beyond, but I never would have thought of doing Crossfit during it. I can’t wait to read about your daily life and how Crossfit fits into your pregnancy. While I’m a long way from becoming pregnant, I love to hear how women stay their healthiest (mentally and physically) during pregnancy. Coming from you, since we’ve dealt with similar things and I consider you (and your blog) having a major impact on how I finally came into “recovery phase”, I am even more interested. Thanks for sharing!

I can’t even begin to tell you how much we are the same on this, with the crossfit style workouts fitting best. Feeling like it just fits right. I’m so happy to hear that you have found that workout so right for you

I admire your dedication to health and fitness regardless of what else is going on in your life–or maybe because of it! You are going to be such a great mama to that baby. He/she is lucky to have you as a model for how to live a healthy life. Someday, I hope I can do the same for my child–both while I’m pregnant and after.
